Doble AA is an emerging artist with enormous potential. His musical career began at age 7 with the National Batuta Foundation, an organization that teaches musical skills to children aged 6 to 16. In 2018, he was part of the first trinational orchestra comprising three countries: Colombia, Peru, and Brazil, which performed at the Municipal Theater of Medellín, Antioquia. In October 2021, he also began participating in fmpsessions, where he has released more than five singles in various genres. In this interview, BlueBook Magazine talks to the young violinist about early begginings, creative goals, and artistic vision.
“I realized very young that I could really have a professional life with music. So, even today, I keep pursuing that dream..”
-Doble AA
BB MAG: How did you start with music?
Doble AA: It all started when the Batuta Foundation first came to my school. When I was 10 years old and in fifth grade, the string orchestra arrived for the first time, and all the children learning music began to learn string instruments. That's how I started learning violin, and that’s where my relationship with music began. When I graduated, I began participating in competitions like rap battles. That’s where I started inventing words, rhyming, the basic concepts of songwriting. From there, I started writing, from small poems to rap songs, leading to where I am now. I kept practicing, and it became part of my life.
BB MAG: Why did you choose the violin as your main instrument?
Doble AA: Well, it’s funny because when the instruments first arrived, I was 9 years old. I didn’t know much about the different instruments back then, and the only instrument I knew and had seen on TV was the violin. So when the strings first arrived and they asked which one I wanted, I chose the violin because it was the only one I knew. It turned out to be a good choice, and I could continue studying music because I liked it.
BB MAG: You are currently pursuing a master's degree in violin studies at the University of Cauca in Popayán. What inspired you to continue your studies there?
Doble AA: Yes, I study instrumental music. I am in my seventh semester. The more time I spent with music, the more I wanted to continue. I realized very young that I could really have a professional life with music. So, even today, I keep pursuing that dream.
BB MAG: What have been some notable moments of your time at university so far?
Doble AA: The university has an orchestra (the University Orchestra of Cauca) that has had many productions I have been part of. Besides the many end-of-semester concerts, we participate in the symphonic courtyard, which brings together singers from Afro-descendant communities in the Pacific.
BB MAG: The quality of your audio and visuals is very impressive, especially your recent single, "Fuiste Tú". Can you tell us more about how you collaborate with FMPsessions to make them possible?
Doble AA: I had already released a song before starting with FMPsessions. I asked them for advice, they were also starting the video creation project. They noticed what I was doing and told me they were going to create a project where they would make a YouTube channel, a Spotify channel with distributors, and invite artists to release songs within the FMP brand. So I joined them, and we started collaborating on different projects. I am in charge of the audio part. And they take care of the music video part. We have been working together since February 2021.
BB MAG: What is your songwriting process?
Doble AA: I think the purpose of making a song is to express something important to the artist. First, I think about what I want to talk about. From there, I start with the instrumental feeling or the lyrics, whichever comes first. Once I understand what it will be about, I start building the whole story with the audio, lyrics, and video so that everything feels connected.
BB MAG: What are your creative influences regarding the themes that inspire you?
Doble AA: There are many artists doing interesting things with their sounds. For example, artists like Fey and Andrés Cepeda influence what I write. I listen to a lot of salsa, I listen to all kinds of music, well, it’s like continuing to listen to different things to implement them, even classical music.
BB MAG: How do you see yourself in 10 years?
Doble AA: I hope to be a bit more established. The goal is to live completely off music, so everything I do is music. That’s my goal.
BB MAG: And who do you think are the artists we should be listening to right now, artists we might not value as much?
Doble AA: Well, from the municipality where I’m from, there are many. Fevier Daza, who is a great composer I think is very underrated. He is a good composer, makes a lot of good music, there is also Zael, who is a friend of mine who also composes human genre music, which is very good, very good.
BB MAG: What is your goal or message as an artist?
Doble AA: There is no way to explain what I feel when making music. The only thing I want is for people to feel what I felt when I wrote the song, for people to listen to the music because they see themselves reflected in it. And for me, that is all I want in my life. My vision is that at some point people will value more every detail and every little thing added to a sound. That they listen a bit beyond and, over time, really understand the intention that goes into my music.
